MATTHEWS’ PICKS OF THE WEEK
1. The excellent action on the big Humboldt squid has to remain our top pick and the bite has extended up out of San Diego all the way into the Santa Monica Bay. Virtually all of the landings along this stretch of the coast are now running these evening charters, and the action has been wild this week with five to 10 squid catches per angler taking no more than two hours. The quality of the big cephalopods has remained very good, with squid up into the 50-pound class. This is staying the top pick and may for some time.2. It wasn’t hard to look like a profit picking the hot striped bass bite at Diamond Valley as one of the top bets last week. There were two trout plants and a full moon. It was a no-brainer, and there were a pile of stripers over 12 pounds caught with relatively light fishing pressure. The biggest striper reported was in the 18-pound class. While the bite won’t be as good as last week, the forecast rain could make this action one of the best bets again this week. So this pick is staying in the No. 2 spot. For that update on the action, you can call the marina at 951-926-7201 or Last Chance Bait and Tackle 951-658-7410.
3. Last week, the No. 3 pick was a distant spot that was planted heavily with trophy trout (Buena Vista Lakes), and the action there was very, very good. This week, this No. 3 pick goes to another water having a major trout derby, Prado Park Lake. It is hosting the third of San Bernardino County Regional Parks’ five trout season derbies this Saturday, and it is getting a bonus plant of 2,000 pounds of trophy rainbows. No one would be surprised to see a 12 to 15-pound rainbow win this event. The lake is closed Thursday and Friday to fishing, so the fish will be acclimated by Saturday. Entry fee is $15 per angler, in addition to the $10 vehicle entry fee. And there are 50 prizes ranging from $35 to $500 in value. For more information, call Prado at 909-597-4260.
